What is vehicle mechanical breakdown warranty?

Once the manufacturer’s warranty expires, you have nothing to protect you from expensive vehicle repairs. Most vehicles come with a 3 year/60,000 km bumper-to-bumper warranty. Once that expires, you have no protection against breakdowns or failures. Umbrella Warranty Ltd. motor vehicle mechanical breakdown program assures that for a specified amount of time and/or mileage, both parts, labour and sales tax (if applicable) required for replacement or repair of covered mechanical systems in your vehicle will be paid.

How do I purchase a motor vehicle mechanical breakdown coverage?

To purchase a Extended Auto Warranty plan please contact Umbrella Warranty. Umbrella Warranty provides extended motor vehicle warranties to consumers for new and used motor vehicles that have travelled a distance less than 200,000 km as indicated by the motor vehicle’s odometer. The warranty will commence and be effective after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. In the event that there is no manufacturer’s warranty at the time of the inception of the warranty, the motor vehicle will then be required to go through and pass a 132-point motor vehicle inspection at an authorized approved and licensed mechanic shop, to determine whether the motor vehicle qualifies for the extended warranty coverage.

Do I really need a Vehicle Mechanical Breakdown Warranty?

There are several important reasons to purchase an extended motor vehicle warranty. Your vehicle is a large investment. One major repair often exceeds the price of an extended motor vehicle warranty. Auto mechanical rates could be as much as $110.00 per hour or more in some markets. An advantage to the warranty being transferable is that it increases the resale value of the car to potential buyers who would like to avoid mechanical bills.

What binds an extended motor vehicle warranty contract?
  • Payment must be received within 24 hours after the warranty sale. The contract will be terminated if the total payment is not received within 7 days of the inception date of the warranty.
  • Under the consumer program the licenced mechanic must certify in a report that the 132-point inspection occurred and the motor vehicle met the operating parameters. Please see terms and conditions of motor vehicle warranty coverage.
  • The motor vehicle inspection must confirm that there are no pre-existing conditions, which would dis-entitle the motor vehicle to enrollment in the program.
What are the repair procedures when I make a claim?

Prior to embarking on a repair, a claim form and estimate with a copy of repair order is submitted by the customer or the licensed repair shop to Umbrella Warranty outlining in detail the repair costs. The repair requisition date must be less than thirty (30) days prior to submission in writing, failing which such claim is ineligible for reimbursement. Provided that a valid estimate is received, Umbrella Warranty agrees to review and respond to the customer as to the eligibility of the repair. As soon as the eligibility of the repairs is approved, Umbrella Warranty will provide an authorization number with a confirmation of the total amount payable. A cheque will be issued to the licensed repair shop.

Is my motor vehicle warranty transferable?

You can transfer the extended auto warranty to another private purchaser. If all the terms and conditions of the warranty have been complied with by the Customer to the satisfaction of Umbrella Warranty. However, a transfer may be made only once by the initial owner of the warranty or the limits in the warranty have not been exceeded prior to a request for the transfer of the warranty. The customer may not transfer the warranty to another motor vehicle. If a motor vehicle is sold, the new owner must report the conveyance to Umbrella Warranty, within ten (10) days of the date of the registration of the transfer of the motor vehicle, by certified or registered mail, the transferee’s name, address and telephone number and all information on the transferee’s identity, as well as copies of the sales contract for the motor vehicle and the motor vehicle registration transfer. Transfer administration fees of $100 plus taxes will be charged to the new motor vehicle owner prior to the contract continuing in force. Failure to make the payment within such 10-day period will terminate the contract immediately.

What is the advantage of purchasing an extended vehicle mechanical warranty while my vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer?

The longer you wait to purchase an extended vehicle warranty, the more expensive it will be. The newer vehicle is, the lower policy rate will be. For example life insurance rates increase as age increases. The coverage comes into effect once the manufacturer’s coverage expires. This is not double coverage.

Does my dealer sell extended motor vehicle coverage?

Maybe, but you will be paying up to 50% more.

What if I want to cancel my extended auto warranty?

By You:

Cancellations within the first ten (10) days following the Effective Date are permitted and we will fully refund Your Fee, provided You have not used their services. You must contact the program Administrator by sending written notice to Umbrella Warranty. You may at any time request that this Certificate be terminated.

Any cancellation beyond ten (10) days after the Certificate Effective Date will take effect on the postmark of Your written notice to Umbrella Warranty or the date specified in Your notice if later than such postmark and as soon as practicable after You make the request. Umbrella Warranty shall refund the amount of Fees actually paid by You that is in excess of the Short Rate Fee calculated according to the table in use by Umbrella Warranty, at the time of the termination.

By UmbrellaWarranty :

  • We may terminate this Certificate at any time by giving You written notice of termination and by refunding concurrently with the giving of notice, the amount of fees paid in excess of the proportional fee for the expired time.
  • The notice of termination may be delivered to you or it may be sent by registered mail to your latest address on our records.
  • Where the notice of termination is delivered to you, five days notice of termination shall be given. Where it is mailed to you, fifteen (15) days notice of termination shall be given with the fifteen (15) day period beginning on the day the registered letter or notification of its delivery is delivered to your address.
  • Umbrella Warranty may void and cancel this Certificate without prior notice if the Covered Person has intentionally failed to disclose, makes a willfully false statement with respect of a claim or makes a willfully false statement with respect to this Certificate or circumstance relating to the breakdown. You will be informed of the cancellation in writing and the reason for termination. Umbrella Warranty, will do so without any further liability. The effective date of a cancellation for fraud and/or material misrepresentation is immediate as determined by Umbrella Warranty. The fee paid by you will be fully refunded and you will have no coverage.

  • Subject to some exceptions, in order to be eligible for financing, the policy premium must exceed $1,000. ;
  • Financing requires an initial payment of $200 and is paid through Interac eTransfer or credit card and completion of an executed finance contract;
  • The finance term cannot exceed a two year term – policies having a one year term are financed over that one year period;
  • The policy can be cancelled by IFS for non- payment;
  • IFS releases the full financed premium to Moore-McLean, the program administrator, within seven days of the effective date of the policy.

Prior to a used vehicle being approved for a vehicle mechanical breakdown warranty what type of motor vehicle inspection is required?

The vehicle must go through an approved and qualified inspection Center prior to a Certificate being issued to ensure and provide written proof to Us that all Components are in place and in proper working order on the coverage Effective Date and that they are properly maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. You retain copies of all receipts as proof of Maintenance performed including oil changes, lubrication, etc., which will be required in the event You file a Claim.

How does the claims process work?

In the event of a claim, call, email or fax Umbrella Warranty with the details of your claim.

Should an emergency occur which requires a breakdown repair to be made at a time when the Umbrella Warranty office is closed, you must call Umbrella Warranty within two business days from the date of the occurrence of the breakdown to obtain prior written authorization for the repair. If covered, you will be reimbursed for the cost of repair.
